Blueberry Crisp

We went berry picking over the weekend and we picked over 6 pounds of blueberries! The first thing that my family wanted me to make was blueberry crisp. Well, I used to make my blueberry crisp with sugar…and a lot of it.  Eek! I experimented and came up with a healthier alternative and I wanted to share it with you.

So first off, look at the size of these tasty blueberries! They are literally the size of a quarter!

They are delicious too! If you have the opportunity to pick your own blueberries, you should do it.  The kids had a great time! It has become one of our family traditions and they really look forward to it.

Picking blueberries!

Picking blueberries!

A family tradition!

A family tradition!

So now for the recipe! This is a simple recipe to throw together and you will probably have most, if not all of all, of these ingredients in your pantry.

Blueberry Crisp

  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

  • 4 cups fresh blueberries
  • 1 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or raw pecans (I used walnuts because I had them in the pantry)
  • 1/2 cup almond meal
  • 1/4 cup melted butter or coconut oil
  • 1/4 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
Wash blueberries and remove any stems. Add to an 8×8 glass dish. Add oats, chopped nuts, almond meal, melted butter or coconut oil, maple syrup, vanilla extract, salt and cinnamon to a bowl. Toss to combine. Spread crisp mixture evenly over blueberries. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until crisp is brown and crispy. Let cool and enjoy! **This can be refrigerated and we think it’s even better the next day after the flavors have melded together even more!
