It’s summer and we have a few vacations planned. We will be heading off on a family vacation this week and it is the first trip that we have taken since our 7 year old outgrew his milk allergy. This is a HUGE relief, but it also means that now we will be preparing less food at the hotel and eating at restaurants more often. The boys are excited about this, but I still want them to have some healthy snacks for the 3 hour road trip, the amusement parks, beach, zoo and parks. So here are a few of the travel snacks that I am taking along with us.
Here are a few of our favorite road trip snacks. My 3 year old’s favorite snacks are applesauce pouches and freeze dried fruit. We buy the Trader Joe’s Applesauce Crushers, but there are a ton of other brands to choose from. Theses are great because I can hand him one in the back seat and I don’t have to worry about him making a mess. I always pack some freeze dried fruit as well. One of our favorites is the Brothers All Natural Apple Fruit Crisps. They are 100% fruit with no sugar added and it’s a bonus that they are in Mickey Mouse Clubhouse packaging. My 3 year old always asks for his “Mickey Mouse Crackers”!
My 7 year old is a big fan of Annie’s Organic Snacks and so am I. His favorites are the fruit snacks and Cheddar Bunnies. They are a great alternative to Goldfish and the other fruit snacks on the market. I also pack the Cliff Kid fruit and veggie ropes for an “on the go” snack for the kids.
Nuts, trail mixes and granola are other great snack idea for road trips. I love these Trader Joe’s individual bags of nuts and Trek mix. Each bag contains just enough for a quick healthy snack. They are perfect to throw into your bag when you are heading out for a day of fun! I also love Purely Elizabeth granola. It’s made with all natural superfood ingredients like quinoa, chia, coconut oil, sunflower seeds and amaranth AND it does not contain refined sugar like many of the granolas on the market.
Can’t forget about snacks for me! My favorite snacks to pack for road trips are Luna Bars, Kind Bars, Quest Bars (mom needs her protein!!), baked pea/black bean snacks, and all natural peanut butter with Ak-Mak crackers. I don’t usually eat crackers, but when I am on the go I will take these along with me. They are made with organic whole wheat flour, honey, sesame seeds, yeast and salt…that’s it! Plus 5 crackers give you 4g of fiber and 5g of protein.
