What is Shakeology and Why Do I Drink It?

What is Shakeology and why did I start drinking it? Those are great questions.  I will start by telling you that I was not a huge fan of protein/meal replacement shakes.  I had bad experiences with other popular shakes and I was very hesitant to try Shakeology. The more that I researched Shakeology, the more I became intrigued.  I started researching the ingredients in Shakeology.  Who really knows what Yakon Root, Reishi Mushroom or Moringa are? I do now that I did my research!  They are just 3 of the ingredients in Shakeology that help lower cholesterol, decrease fatigue, and enhance your immune system.  

So what is Shakeology?

Shakeology is a protein rich, nutrient dense, superfood shake that is packed with essential amino acids (Amaranth, Camu-Camu, Goji berry, Sacha Inchi), prebiotics/probiotics (Yacon Root, Lactobacillus, Sporogenes), digestive enzymes (Amylase, Papain, Cellulase, Lactase, Lipase, Protease, Bromelain), antioxidants (Cacao, Coconut Flower Nectar, Acerola Cherry, Pomegranate, Blueberry, Green Tea, Rose Hips, Cinnamon, Luo Han Guo), super greens/photonutrients (wheat grass, Oat Grass, Barley, Moringa, Spirulina) and 23 vitamins and minerals that your body needs to function for optimal health.  Not to mention that it is delicious and perfect for busy moms like myself who need a quick nutritious meal.  This is my one meal a day that I don’t have to think about, but I still know I am getting the nutrition I need. It comes in a variety of flavors (chocolate, vanilla, greenberry, strawberry, vegan chocolate and vegan tropical strawberry). All of the flavors are soy free and the vegan formula is free of whey protein.  The vegan chocolate is my favorite.  The Vegan Shakeology is made with high quality plant proteins derived from brown rice, pea, chia, flax, quinoa and oat.  This was very important to me.  My son had a milk allergy at the time that I started to drink Shakeology, so I felt comfortable having it in the house.  It is also great for people who have difficulty digesting milk based products.

So after much research, I started drinking Shakeology daily.  I have now been drinking it daily for 6 months.  I feel so confident in the benefits of drinking Shakeology, that I have shared it with my family, including my kids. Luckily, it is one of the few foods that my picky 3 year old will eat and I get to sneak in some fruits and veggies for him!  My husband also started drinking the shakes and I will share the benefits he has seen since drinking Shakeology as well.

What are the benefits of drinking Shakeology?

What benefits have I noticed during the last 6 months? Since drinking Shakeology daily, I have noticed:

  • Increased energy
  • Weight loss (when paired with exercise)
  • Decrease in my cravings for sweets (and I had a huge sweet tooth!!)
  • Improvements in my digestion.  I am now very “regular”
  • An 11 point decrease in my cholesterol level since last year. That was mind blowing to me! High cholesterol runs in my family so this is always a concern for me
  • Improved immune system function.  I was not sick once the entire winter! My kids also enjoy the shakes and were relatively healthy this winter.  They had a few colds here and there, but we did not make one trip to the pediatrician all winter.  That is amazing!  Last winter we were there at least once a month for ear infections, reparatory infections, croup, etc…
  • I stay full longer.  I can have my shake in the morning for breakfast and I will be full until lunch time

My husband has also noticed significant improvements is his health.  Since Shakeology is full of prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes, he no longer suffers from bouts of IBS.  He has not had a flare up for months! He has also experienced increased energy levels, weight loss (12 pounds in 3 months!), and improved immune function. He is a sales executive for a payroll company and he is in constant contact with people. He was not sick at all this past winter either, despite a lot of hand shaking and constant contact with the public. He also never ate breakfast because he did not have time to prepare something before he ran out the door.  Now he quickly makes his shake and is out the door.  Now that he is having breakfast, his metabolism is boosted for the day, he has more energy, and he snacks less during the day

How do I prepare my shakes, how often do I drink them, and what are my favorite recipes?

Shakeology is made to be consumed once a day as a meal replacement, post workout recovery shake, or nutrient dense snack.  I generally make mine for breakfast, since I am on the go most mornings.  I make my shakes with unsweetened almond milk, fruits, and lots of ice.  Ice is key! You also need to be sure to blend for a minimum of 30 seconds. Here are a few of my favorite recipes:

Chocolate Peanut Butter

  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 scoop of chocolate vegan Shakeology
  • 1/2 of a banana
  • 4-5 frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 Tbsp natural peanut butter
  • handful of ice

Blend for 30 seconds and enjoy

Shamrock Shake
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup of baby spinach
  • 1 scoop vanilla Shakeology
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/4 of an avocado 
  • 1/8 tsp pure peppermint extract 
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract 
  • 4 to 5 ice cubes

Blend for 30-40 seconds. Enjoy!

PB & J

  • 1 scoop vanilla Shakeology
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 cup red grapes
  • 2 tsp natural peanut butter
  • handful of ice

Blend for 30 seconds. Enjoy!
